10 Biggest Short Haircut Mistakes

curly hair cut mistakeMistake 1: Making the Cut If You’re Curly

Corkscrews and short hair don’t mix. “If you have tight curls, you’ll have to use a blow-dryer and pull on each ringlet to stretch it out, which is time consuming,” says hairstylist Serge Normant of the Serge Normant at John Frieda salon in New York City. “You’re better off with a layered bob—the weight of the extra length relaxes the curl.”

If you look like you could host the evening news, your haircut is too blunt. “Adding layers throughout—especially underneath—makes a short cut look more youthful,” says hairstylist River Lloyd of the Serge Normant at John Frieda salon in New York City. You also want to mess up the texture—”when the hair is smooth and you can’t see the layers, that’s when it starts to look like a helmet.” Ditch the hair spray and pick up a bottle of spray wax (Lloyd recommends Sally Hershberger Genius Spray Wax). Mist throughout and then blow-dry the hair up and over to the opposite side of the head. When you let it back down, it will hang flat, without that dated under-flip.

Are you wondering if you can wear your short hair in an updo?  There are many styles available that can be created with short hair however certain types of hair may work better for an updo.  For example there are certain hairstyles that are suited for fine hair, just as there are those which are better suited for curly hair.  By looking at these styles though, it may be hard to determine which is right for you, especially in choosing something as important as the right updo.

With short hair you can create an updo, backdo or even a halfdo.  The looks are endless, as you find what works best for your hair type.  A backdo is a style in which the hair is up, but at the nape of the neck, so as not to be too high on the head.   A halfdo is where you pin up part of your hair using curls, twists, and beautiful accessories to accentuate the part of the hair that is pinned up, and then you can style the hair that is left down to be sleek and elegant or fun and edgy.  There are certain ways which you can manipulate your short hair to work best in an updo.  You can pin the hair at the crown using curls, twists, and varying types of products to help create the perfect updo look.  You may also take advantage of hair accessories which can be used to accompany an updo.

Prom Updo For Thick Curly Hair

When thinking of prom and how to style your hair in an updo, girls with thick curly hair seem to have the advantage over the girls who do not.  The girls with out thick and curly hair will need to create volume on their own with the use of hot rollers or curling irons to help create lift and volume needed for an updo.

One elegant style you can try is a ringlet inspired updo.  To accomplish this hairstyle you will need to wash your hair at least twenty four hours before you want to wear this updo, as dirty hair works better to keep and hold the curls in place.  After you wash your hair use a diffuser to help create tight ringlets in your naturally curly hair.  If you do not have naturally curly hair you will need to set your hair overnight on tiny rag, foam or spiral curlers to create a lot of tight curls.  Once you have your curls created you will need to form a half ponytail in your hair and then loop that half ponytail around itself to create a loop.  Pin this with bobby pins to hold the loop in place.  Once this step is done you can take the bottom half of your hair and part it in the middle.  Take one section and pull up toward the base of the half ponytail.  Pin the curls as close to the base of the half ponytail to create balance.  Repeat with the other side of your parted hair and secure with bobby pins.  Once you have completed the steps you will have created a beautiful ringlet updo.

Another great prom updo for curly thick hair is a curly halfdo.  To get this look you simply use a curling iron or hot rollers to add curl to your hair, if it is straight, if not use a styling product to enhance your already natural curls.  Pull your hair back at the sides just above the ears and pin it up allowing some of the curls to hang softly to add volume and the appearance of an easy relaxed look.

Short Hairstyles For Curly Hair

When hair is naturally curly it makes it harder to style as you will find problems with it being too fluffy or frizzy or even too flat. With curly hair it sits thick and heavy on the head and during the summer months can make it uncomfortable, so here are a few tips for short hairstyles with curly hair.

One of the best things you can do with your curly hair is to have it layered. Layering your hair will help thin it out rather than shortening it up and leaving it not feeling too heavy and hot. If you cut curly hair when its straight you must be careful to not cut too much hair otherwise you will be in for a huge surprise when your hair goes back to being curly. Not only will it look much shorter, you might not like it as much as you did before. When you layer the hair in a bob cut, the layers will make it look thinner and less frizzy. If you have problems with frizzy hair you can always buy anti-frizz shampoo and conditioners. They even have products you can spray in your hair to help with the frizz control.

With curly hair you can always leave it naturally curled or you can always straighten it with a flat iron. Not only is this a completely different look, you might shock people who are used to seeing you with curly hair but it also takes a long time to straighten the hair and only takes a little bit of water on the hair before it goes back to being curly. There are products you can use to help keep your hair straight for a longer period of time than the first time you wash it. You can try a hair relaxer to create your straight hair and leave it or let the hair wave a little bit, which is also a popular and good looking hairstyle.
